“What a daddy-issues attention-seeking slut! Now, rate her as a sex object out of 10. Lucky we are so morally and intellectually superior to her.”

She argues there’s another way to fight crime. “We ought to invest a lot more in our public schools. You know, feed the kids breakfast, lunch, and dinner; have after-school activities; keep the schools open until nine o’clock in the evenings and on weekends; invest in things like the Boys and Girls Club and the Park District—I mean, everything, basically, to dramatically ramp up the investments in our children.”
But even in Democrat-dominated Cook County, it’s hard to imagine that happening. “I was at an event last week, a fund-raising event, actually, where somebody said, ‘All my neighbors are Republicans—people who live on my block who I like, who wouldn’t support the idea you were just promulgating,’” Preckwinkle recalled. “And he said the people on his block he knew would rather pay to keep somebody incarcerated than to support music lessons or soccer team memberships or basketball team uniforms for kids in poor neighborhoods. “We’ve got in this country such distorted values. In the last 30 or 40 years we’ve invested all this money in our prison system, and our schools are starving for money.”

that first paragraph up there—the stuff about investing in after school activities and keeping the schools open until 9pm, etc. —I’m thinking about that in context to of the Emergency Managers in Michigan. And how if they were *really* invested in fixing economic problems rather than privatization, they’d be figuring out ways to do *exactly* what she is suggesting. Making the schools an essential part of the community means that youth don’t drop out and people don’t transfer to other districts. it means that people *move into* that district.
another example, what would happen if community groups were trained and paid to go to houses in the community and clean up lead? not only would it provide jobs, but when there’s a proven correlation between lead levels and low achievment in school—what effect would it have on student’s test schools and ability to focus and stay in school if their bodies aren’t being poisoned? there are seriously NO foundation grants for this sort of thing? why aren’t city mayors, councils, EMs, etc working their asses off to find foundation grants and corporate investment in cleaning up lead so that public schools can stay open—instead of building a whole new building to stick a charter school in?

Next time I hear that we should fight racism with cool, calm logic, I will be thinking about this.

Apparently there are some tentative correlations from early lead exposure to anti-social behavior… we really need to get on the problem of lead in this country, partially for historical preservation and more importantly because it’s a huge contributor to problems with public health.

God we fuck up teenagers’ heads. We tell them that biological conditions are moral punishments and then we get all shocked when they don’t practice rational risk management of biological conditions. We teach them “sex is super desirable and all the cool kids do it, and it’s hideously shameful and will destroy your life” and we wonder why they act an eensy bit neurotic about it. If you tried to design a system for making sexually active kids confused and unsafe, you couldn’t do much better than the American media and school system.
And for once, the answer is relatively simple. Just talk about sex like it’s a part of life. Some people have sex and some people don’t, because people are different. STIs aren’t bad because they’re Dirty Crotch Rot; they’re bad because they’re contagious illnesses like strep throat or whooping cough, and you can ask a doctor to check for and treat them just like you would with strep throat. Unwanted pregnancy isn’t a scarlet A; it’s a mostly-preventable accident that sometimes occurs when people are going about their normal business of having sex. You can ask the school counselor about a variety of topics, including career planning, problems at home, questions about sex, or conflicts with teachers.
If we could just get the goddamn stick out of our collective ass and accept that sex is a human activity and teenagers are humans, maybe there wouldn’t be quite so many plaintive “I don’t understand my body and I’m confused and scared and I don’t know anyone I can ask in person” messages flying out into the world.

IN-DEED also STIs are preventable and not taking steps to prevent them is impolite if you ask me (you cover your mouth when you cough, you cover your junk if you’re with a casual partner, it’s a “not being a rude fuck head” thing)

Can we not immediately jump to criticizing a woman’s appearance even though she is a shit headed wrongy wrongerson, who’s ideas and values are unforgivably bigoted, “Ur ugly” is WHAT WE ALWAYS FUCKING GO TO whenever we disagree with a woman.

If you’re “mature” enough to have sex, you’re mature enough to deliver the baby you’ll possibly create, abortion isn’t an option.
if you’re “mature” enough to own a gun, you’re mature enough to die from being fucking shot. medical care isn’t an option.
If you’re “mature” enough to eat, you’re mature enough to get food poisoning. Going to the hospital isn’t an option.
If you’re “mature” enough to drive, you’re mature enough to die of any injuries you might sustain in an accident, EMTs aren’t an option
You know what? I am sick of people defining gender via genitalia. I fucking hate that people assume I am female or a woman because I’ve given birth. Guess what? I’m neither! Genderfluid and intersex!
Suck on that, radfems. Y’all keep supporting patriarchy. I will always support trans* women before a cis woman.

About the phrase and idea of “Go get a job!”
A job is not something you get. You don’t “get a job” like picking out your toothpaste. This isn’t 1954, when you could waltz on down to Mr. Wall’s corner shop and ask to be a stocker or a cashier, or prance in to the local…
